Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect during my first session? Do I need to bring anything?

The first session in therapy we will begin to get to know each other, get a clear understanding of the issue(s) that bring you to therapy, and begin to identify goals for therapy. Also, we will review office policies and go over the required paperwork. For kids and teens, we will meet together with your parent(s) to obtain this initial information and consent, and then we will meet 1:1 to explore your concerns and your goals for therapy. We also may play games, create art, or simply talk.

What's the difference between talking to a therapist vs. my best friend?

Having a good friend or relative to talk to about life issues is a wonderful thing! I know how much I enjoy sharing life with my friends and family -- relying on them for feedback and self-checks on certain issues. However, trained mental health clinicians have specialized training in providing non-judgmental, confidential therapeutic support based on sound, researched, and tested theories and techniques to help you address specific issues in a safe, systematic approach. Therapists provide their focused and undivided attention along with unbiased support to help you find solutions & learn new skills to reach your goals for a happier, healthier life.

How long will therapy take?

Therapy is a highly-individualized experience, so the length of time to achieve your goals will vary depending on the effort and motivation you bring to work towards a change in yourself and how you see the world around you. Some clients experience shifts in just a few sessions, whereas others may find that they need months or years of psychotherapy. We will plan for termination (the end of therapy) together as you approach the completion of your goals. However, our therapeutic relationship is strictly voluntary. At any time during our work together, you have the right to decide to end treatment. If you are thinking about ending therapy, I encourage you to discuss it with me.

Some of my friends in therapy get "homework." Will you require me to do homework too?

Homework will never be required, however, since we spend only 1 hour per week together, much of the progress you will make will be determined by the time you spend outside of therapy working towards your goals. This may include journaling, working on your hierarchy, practicing mindfulness skills, working on communicating with others, etc. I will encourage you to invest time in self-care activities, but there will be no condemnation for not completing tasks. I believe that when you are ready (and therapy can help you get there), you'll invest the time and we will celebrate your victories and progress.

How do I schedule an appointment with you?

The first step to setting up an appointment is submitting an appointment request. It takes just a few minutes and this information will be helpful to speed up the intake process.
